Hair grows in what is known as follicular units. Each follicular unit has 1, 2, or 3 hairs that grow in a group together. During a hair transplant, we harvest follicular units from the back of the scalp, where the follicles are resistant to hair loss. Each of these follicular unit grafts is individually transplanted into the area where we want more hair, usually on the crown or front of the scalp. Each graft has a small hair transplanted with it and that helps guide us during the transplant procedure. Most of those small hairs fall out in the first few weeks after a transplant. This likely occurs because the follicular unit is “stunned” after being transplanted. After the transplant, the follicular unit gains a foothold in the new area of the scalp and starts producing new hair. This process can take anywhere from 3 – 6 months to get growing. When the hair first grows out, it is as soft as baby’s hair, and then that thin hair is replaced by thicker and thicker hair until the full mature hair is growing from the follicle. You will see your hair growing in as early as 2-3 months after the transplant. But it can take from 9-12 months for full growth to occur and to see the full results of your transplant.
